I think that bit at the bnineging about J’s husband not wanting to ski shows that in some way there are chinks of sunlight in our lives when we can do things our husbands weren’t too keen on. Richard died 11 years ago now, my children were 6 and 15. We’d had a sailing dinghy and sailed in dinghies in the Med and at the local sailing clubs. After he died my mum also died (it was a bad year….) and she left me £4k in cash to ‘go off and have a proper holiday’. So we went to Antigua. The children went off and sailed and my daughter went with the kids club and learned to sail. Then my son and I went on the catamaran sailing course – 24 knots – fantastic – I did have a nasty moment when we capsized and my leg got trapped in the toestraps but you can hardley see the damage now… One morning they said “There’s a spare space in one of the day boat, does anyone want to go?”. That was a 36 ft yacht. So I went with 4 blokes, I could tell they thought I was just going to be useless but in fact when we got back at the end of a long day one of them said “That Irene’s got a good pair of shoulders on her” – that was from the winching.Since then I’ve passed my RYA competent crew and Dayskipper qualifications, sailed from St Tropez to Naples and from Ireland to the West coast of Scotland. I’m hoping to do a lot more sailing once my daughter leaves for university….. and my husband would never have done big boat sailing – too cold and it takes so long to make a cup of tea!
